Graduate Certificate in Counselling Skills

The Graduate Certificate in Counselling Skills is designed to offer high-quality skills and personal development opportunities to those using counselling approaches and ideas in a wide variety of settings: health, education, the Church, education, criminal justice, human resource management, and the voluntary sector.

The aims of the course are:
  • to enable participants to develop counselling skills that can be applied in their present or potential work settings;
  • to provide opportunities to reflect on practice, and develop a conceptual understanding of the aims and process of counselling;
  • to facilitate an informed awareness of the ways in which personal qualities and experience can be used in a counselling role.
The course consists of a total of four modules taught on a part-time basis over one year, including weekly classes and four Saturday workshops (total attendance 130 hours). The course meets on Wednesdays (choice of morning or evening attendance). Classroom sessions are augmented by an internet learning package.

Semester 1. Basic counselling skills

Counselling skills 1: Listening and feeling
Counselling skills 2: Relating and responding

Semester 2. Application of skills in practice

Counselling skills 3: Facilitating learning and change
Counselling skills 4: Application and practice


Entry criteria are:
  1. evidence of previous study indicating readiness to undertake a course of studies at this level (for example relevant work experience, a degree, HN qualification, or professional training);
  2. personal qualities and attitudes suitable for engagement in counselling relationships; willingness to be involved in self-exploration.
Assessment comprises a combination of methods: essays, a case study, and a personal journal.

The course fee is £980 (September 2007 entry). The course is validated by COSCA, the lead professional body for counselling in Scotland.

The Director of counselling courses at University of Abertay Dundee is Professor John McLeod, author of Counselling Skill (Open University Press), the main textbook for the Certificate programme.

Career Opportunities
The majority of course participants use the Certificate experience to enhance their capacity to undertake their existing work role. The Certificate also represents the first step towards a professional qualification in counseling - successful completion of the course will contribute to eligibility for entry to the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Counselling.
